Article Summary

Summary of the Global Layoff Wave in the Wake of the Pandemic

In recent years, the once highly sought-after "golden rice bowls" of foreign companies such as Mercedes-Benz have been severely impacted by the pandemic, leading to massive layoffs. Mercedes-Benz cut a staggering 20,000 jobs, which has had a significant impact on many families who depended on these positions for their livelihoods.

Automotive Industry Layoffs

The automotive industry has seen some of the most severe layoffs, with traditional car giants like BMW, Audi, Land Rover, and Nissan joining Mercedes-Benz in cutting their workforce. BMW announced 6,000 job cuts, representing 17.6% of its total workforce, and a cancellation of 10,000 temporary positions. Audi trimmed 9,500 jobs in Germany, which is 15% of its workforce in the country. Land Rover may cut up to 20,000 of its 40,000 global employees, and Nissan slashed 19,000 jobs across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Spain.

Domestic Listed Companies in China

In 2022, 1,697 A-share listed companies in China laid off around 900,000 people, a significant hit to what are considered the backbone of the country's economy. The top 10 companies for layoffs included China Tianji, HNA Technology, Zhengbang Technology, China Railway Construction Corporation, Blu-ray Development, and others, with layoffs ranging from 3.43% to a staggering 99.82% of their respective workforces.

Pharmaceutical Industry Layoffs

In the pharmaceutical sector, out of 442 listed companies, 116 had layoffs totaling nearly 40,000 employees. Companies like Dongyang Guang, Hengrui Medicine, and Kangmei Pharmaceutical were among those with substantial reductions, exceeding 1,000 layoffs each.

Internet Company Layoffs

Internet companies have not been immune to this trend. Zhihu initiated layoffs affecting 20%-30% of its workforce. Didi Chuxing, Alibaba's local life business, Tencent's gaming division, and JD.com have all executed significant job cuts, with some departments facing up to an 80% reduction in staff.

The pandemic has left industries across the board struggling, with economic downturns, plummeting stock prices of leading tech companies, and declining valuations of unicorns further exacerbating the employment crisis. Enterprises are prioritizing stability and turning to layoffs as a direct method to stem financial losses. It is hoped that companies will provide adequate compensation to laid-off workers, as each one supports a family, and collectively, these layoffs affect countless households.

The employment challenges are compounded by the entry of 10.76 million college graduates into the job market in the latter half of the year. Those currently employed are urged to value their jobs, while those seeking employment must persevere through these difficult times. The lasting effects of the pandemic have underscored the importance of effective upward management and adapting to rapidly changing circumstances in the workforce.
