Linux Certification Summary

Linux certifications assess the ability to deploy and configure Linux systems in a business environment, ranging from vendor-specific to distribution-agnostic certifications. They provide specialized paths for IT professionals to demonstrate their knowledge and enhance their resumes, serving as an entry point for beginners in IT or as a skill expansion for experienced system administrators.

1. CompTIA Linux+

CompTIA Linux+ is a vendor-neutral certification covering command line usage, storage management, applications, installation, and networking, with additional topics like containers, SELinux security, and GitOps. It is valid for three years with no prerequisites, requiring a single exam with a passing score of 720/900 or 80%.

2. Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)

RHCSA is the first certification for Red Hat Enterprise Linux administrators, focusing on maintenance, installation, configuration, and networking with hands-on command-line experience. It involves a performance-based exam with no prerequisites and a passing score of 70%.

3. Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)

The RHCE builds on RHCSA topics, emphasizing automation, particularly Ansible. It requires the RHCSA certification and includes a task-driven exam with a passing score of 70%.

4. Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA)

RHCA candidates must pass a combination of five Red Hat exams, with two focus areas: Infrastructure and Enterprise Applications. It is the highest certificate recognized by Red Hat and requires five supporting certifications with varying passing scores based on selected prerequisite exams.

5. Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS)

The LFCS is a distribution-neutral certification by the Linux Foundation covering basic deployment, networking, storage, commands, and user management. It serves as a stepping stone for more specialized topics, with no prerequisites and a passing score of 67%.

LPIC-2 builds on LPIC-1 skills, adding advanced networking, system configuration, and deployment topics, requiring the LPIC-1 certification, two exams, and the same passing score as LPIC-1.

8. Linux Professional Institute LPIC-3

LPIC-3 offers four specialties for enterprise-level Linux administration tailored to specific job roles. Each specialty requires a single exam, LPIC-1 and LPIC-2 certifications, with a passing score of 500/800 or 62.5%.

SCA targets basic topics for SLES administrators, designed for entry-level professionals with no prerequisites and a 70% passing score.
