PMP Process Groups Summary
Although the new PMP exam content outline scores based on the domains of "People, Process, and Business Environment," the framework of the 5 process groups remains relevant. These groups are "Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing," summarized as IPECC. Both traditional predictive project management and the Agile knowledge system focus on these groups, albeit with differing approaches and values.
1. Initiating Process Group
The Initiating Process Group emphasizes the need for clear objectives based on the SMART principle and articulated through the "5W2H" method. It answers key questions regarding the purpose, nature, constraints, and key stakeholders of the project.
2. Planning Process Group
The Planning Process Group underlines the importance of having a plan, with 24 processes encompassed within it. The process of "Develop Project Management Plan" integrates the other 23 processes, which are crafted not unilaterally but collaboratively by the project manager, relevant specialists, and functional managers to ensure the plan is actionable.
3. Executing Process Group
The Executing Process Group highlights organized and planned action under the project manager's leadership. The group's 10 processes demonstrate the team's ability to deliver results, coordinate resources, and manage risks effectively.
4. Monitoring and Controlling Process Group
The Monitoring and Controlling Process Group ensures adherence to the plan and accountability for deviations. With 12 processes, it includes the "Monitor and Control Project Work" process that oversees project performance and the "Perform Integrated Change Control" process that manages all changes following the start of project execution.
5. Closing Process Group
The Closing Process Group consists of a single process that encapsulates the predictive lifecycle principle of having a definitive start and end to a project.
